Southwest of Lincoln was a bust today. Denton, Pleasant Dale, and Milford, nothing. But a lovely drive, some nice new tan dirt on the new car, and a nice stop in one town to eat that 7-layer burrito I got on the way out of Lincoln, as I listened to a story on Hiroshima on DemocracyNow.org’s broadcast. There’s a short clip on their website of video which I haven’t yet gone to see. I thought of the fragility of those brick buildings I am looking for once again, or still… how completely useless they would be if “the ultimate evil” were to go off somewhere. But I still feel the urge to find that building, even if I have to put up fliers on town bulletin boards, even if I have to ask locals in town halls and coffee shops who might own this or that building. Nebraska City appears to be the place with the most buildings at the lowest price. But I don’t know if I like that town, 50 miles to the southeast of here. Greenwood, or Mead are a little closer to both here and Omaha, and they too have a few buildings to dig into. Haven’t tried northwest yet, and there are scattered towns I haven’t visited in each quadrant I have tried – northeast, southeast, southwest. As much driving as I do I’m sure I’ll find another candidate town or two. The weather’s still warm enough to drive. Today, it was perfect. But still bupkis.
